QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Below are a list of frequently asked questions about Temple Beth Am and the campaign. If you have any other questions, please contact us at beyondthecurve@tbam.org.

Timing

Q:
What is the timeframe for construction?
A:

Construction began during the Summer/Fall 2019 and is projected to be complete during the Winter of 2022.

Q:
How will the project be phased?
A:

Phase 1: This project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 began on the west side of the campus, by demolishing the Indoor Gym, Outdoor Basketball Court, and Auditorium. The new Day School building will be erected in its place. Existing school classroom facilities and the library will be not be affected during this construction phase. All construction areas are fenced off from the rest of the campus. This project is phased to be the least disruptive and minimally invasive to our students. Many of our historical items such as the large needlepoint, stained glass windows, sculptures, etc. from the buildings that will be demolished have been preserved and will be showcased in our renovated campus.
*(Timing: Summer/Fall of 2019 – Spring 2021)

Phase 2: Phase 2 will begin when our students move into the new school building. Construction will begin on the north side of campus, demolishing the Early Childhood building. In its place, the Welcome Center, Performing Arts Center/Chapel, and Athletic Facility will be built. Construction areas will be fenced off from the rest of the campus. The Lewis Religious Life Center will remain, as will everything east of that building. New landscaping, outdoor play spaces and parking will also be constructed.
*(Timing: Summer 2021 – Winter 2022)
*Timing based on permitting/construction. Subject to modification.

Q:
Will the school be closed at any time during construction?
A:

No. The school will remain open during the time of construction.

Q:
Will the classrooms stay the same during construction?
A:

Yes. The classrooms will stay the same during construction. Classes will not be interrupted. We are not anticipating any additional temporary classrooms/trailers.

Q:
When will the instructional pool and facilities be ready?
A:

The instructional pool* and recreational facilities will be ready late winter of 2022. * The instructional pool will be used during the summer to teach young children how to swim.

Transition

Q:
Will carpool change? (Drop off and Pick up)
A:

During construction, the carpool system remains similar to the current system. After dropping off or picking up your child, parents will turn around and exit through the main entrance to campus.
After construction, the flow of the campus will be similar, however drop-off and pick-up will be at the back entrance to the new day school and then exit onto Kendall Drive.

Q:
How will the construction affect the parking?
A:

Parking will be more limited during construction. As a result, we are exploring different options for our staff and parents. We have hired a traffic specialist to help us find the best possible solutions.

Q:
Where will the children eat lunch/play basketball/use an auditorium during construction?
A:

We are fortunate that many of the spaces on our campus are multi-purpose.  The children will eat lunch in one of our multi-purpose spaces. The Social Hall and the fields will be used for Physical Education and various athletic activities.

The Sanctuary and Chapel will both be used as an Auditorium/Performing Arts space during this transition.

Q:
How will the construction affect Summer Camp?
A:

Temple Beth Am Summer Camp is currently not in session. It is our plan to re-open summer camp after the construction has been complete during the Summer of 2023.

Construction

Q:
How will TBAM control the noise and dust from construction?
A:

All construction areas will be fenced off from the rest of the campus. There is a double fence (one 8 foot and one 4 foot ‘snow fence’) as a boundary between the construction and the rest of the campus. The 8-foot fence is made of wood, covered in a vinyl sign, and there is no visibility between the construction area and the rest of campus. The actual physical demolition for Phase 1 was complete before school began in the fall 2019. Wet demolition was the method used to demolish the buildings. Constant streams of water were used to continuously douse the area to minimize the dust in the air. Noise: most of the noise comes from the demolition which was done before the start of the school year. The Owner’s Rep will work closely with the Day School to coordinate and minimize noise disturbances.

Q:
What is the total cost?
A:

The total cost of this campus renewal is approximately $55 million dollars. We have had two angel donors help seed this campaign with gifts totaling $20 million dollars.  In addition, we are working on securing large matching grants as additional incentives for participation from our families and members. Please visit the Progress page on the website for an up to date fundraising amount. To participate, please visit our How to Help page or contact our Development Director Ilana Gilat, igilat@tbam.org.

Q:
Will there be an increase in tuition to help with these renovations?
A:

There are no plans to increase tuition due to construction. There is a Capital Campaign in place to meet construction costs.

Recognition

Q:
How will my gift be recognized?
A:

We have a list of Naming Opportunities that donors may dedicate. Gifts will be recognized on a central donor wall in our Day School Atrium and Welcome Center Lobby as well as on central donor plaques around the area of the dedication.

Q:
How will TBAM recognize donor’s names and dedications from past campaigns? This refers to dedications that are currently on buildings that will be demolished.
A:

We formed a special task force to address this topic. The task force researched the best and most honorable way to commemorate and honor those who helped build our current campus. Their names have been recognized on new donor plaques on the wall outside of our current Chapel. Please visit our Progress page for a blog post and photo from our dedication ceremony, where the new plaques were revealed.
